Studio & Safety Information for the Ceramics Studio at Peters Valley... |
# OF STUDENTS: 12 |
EQUIPMENT:The Ceramics Studio at Peters Valley Craft Center has a well-equipped studio for wheel throwing and hand building. The studio can accommodate up to 12 students, allowing ample room for students to work. The studio features wheels, kilns, (and the famous Anagama kiln behind the studio), large sinks (each with hot and cold running water). Although we have a broad range of equipment available, the equipment used in your class will be determined by your instructor and will be appropriate to the techniques covered. Equipment includes electric wheels with reversing switches, kick wheels, wedging table, large worktables, clay mixer, scales, plaster working area, assorted rolling pins, plaster molds, bisque molds, canvas-covered work boards, and banding wheels.
Kilns and Firing: Peters Valley features a variety of kilns for a great learning environment. Most kilns are located outside. Classes have varied curricula and the type and number of firings are determined by the instructor. The Anagama and Two-chamber wood kilns are fired with internationally recognized ceramicists. |
Your instructor will determine which equipment is suitable for use during a class and some equipment may not be available in all sessions. The student is responsible for any damaged and/ or lost items and will be required to pay for the cost of repair and/or replacement of the damaged/ lost equipment. |
STUDIO & MATERIALS FEES: Peters Valley sets estimated fees according to supplies your instructor has requested. In a small number of cases, where the price of steel or other supplies has inflated, students will be made aware of a slightly higher fee when they are sent their materials list for the workshop. In the production of their own work, students will be charged for additional materials. |
STUDIO SUPPLIES: You should bring your own favorite tools which might include brushes, stamps, paddles, slip-trailers, sgraffito tools, sketchbooks, drawing supplies, apron, and towels. For MOST workshops, one bag of clay is included in the studio & materials fee and additional bags may be purchased as needed in the studio. Carefully read the student materials list to see what other items you should bring. If you have any questions about supplies, please contact the studio. |
HAZARDOUS WASTE INFO: The school maintains a comprehensive hazardous waste program and asks that you limit the materials you bring on campus to those classified as non-toxic. The material must be in its original packaging. An environmental fee will be assessed for classes generating hazardous waste. In order to limit the hazardous waste generated in the studios, we cannot allow students to bring toxic materials outside of the class supply list into studios. If your class requires hazardous materials, they will need to be disposed of properly. A Hazardous Waste Disposal Fee will be charged in addition to the Studio & Materials Fee. |
CLASSROOM LOCATION: The Ceramics Studio is located at the end of Ceramics Lane, just off Kuhn Road (about ¼ mile from the main office). |
SHARED WORKSPACE & EQUIPMENT: Shared air space/ music: Each class should discuss the playing of music and reach a consensus on the time of day, the volume, and the type of music to be played. Tolerance and consideration are expected from everyone. |
STORAGE: Lockable storage space is not available at Peters Valley Craft Center. Please lock valuables in your car. |
SAFETY INFO: Safety is of prime importance at Peters Valley Craft Center. Safety is discussed prior to every workshop beginning. No one may begin using the studio before this discussion is complete. Due to the nature of the equipment in the studio, no student may use any tool until he or she has been instructed in its use. |
STUDIO SPECIFIC SAFETY INFO: The studio is equipped with a first-aid kit, a telephone, and a rest room. Students are encouraged to bring their own personal safety gear including respirator or particle masks, gloves, safety glasses. You must wear a respirator (not supplied) while scraping kiln shelves, or while handling any powdered material, and you must also wear safety glasses while scraping kiln shelves or using the grinder. |
DRESS CODE: Dress appropriately for your workshop by wearing closed-toe shoes and long pants and long sleeved shirts while stoking the wood kiln or firing the Anagama. Kiln gloves are also encouraged. |
ALCOHOL & DRUGS: Alcohol is not permitted while working in the studios. The use of illegal drugs at Peters Valley is prohibited. While you are at Peters Valley Craft Center, you are staying in a federal park, and rules and regulations of the Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area also apply. (www.nps.gov/dewa) |
CLEAN UP: Your time here will pass quickly. Classes begin (in most cases) on Friday mornings at 9am and will end in the afternoon on the last day of the workshop with the shop clean-up. Clean-up is part of the workshop experience. Please do not plan to work the last afternoon of the last day of class. Special arrangements should be made with the coordinator if you cannot participate in clean-up. |
