Woodland Wanderings

The Sally D. Francisco Gallery at Peters Valley Craft Center is pleased to present a solo exhibition by noted textile artist Liz Alpert Fay entitled “Woodland Wanderings.” The exhibition will be on view from August 14th through September 26th, 2010, and will feature two series of wall hangings as well as selected sculpture.
A contemporary rug hooker using traditional techniques in innovative ways, Liz takes the medium and incorporates it with other processes and mixed media in this installation. The two series of wall pieces, “Winter Series” and “Meditations in Color,” take rug hooking beyond its historical associations of antique rugs, dark colors and traditional patterns, and into modernity with Liz’s use of bright colors, recycled materials and contemporary designs. Her sculptural “Tree Skirts” series pushes these ideas further by integrating the almost-forgotten textile techniques of traditional rug hooking, penny rug, standing wool, knitting, spool knitting, stitching, hand quilting, and couching with found wood and other recycled materials in a fresh and current presentation. Though these techniques are extremely labor-intensive, Liz keeps the work spontaneous and invigorating.
The installation of “Woodland Wanderings” accentuates the parallels between art and nature, the root of Liz’s work. The series presented capture the essence of feelings of a time and place in New England’s beautiful woods. From the “Tree Skirts’” celebration of natural beauty to the changing colors throughout the seasons of New England creating “Winter Series,” and the annual growth rings of trees that inspire “Mediations in Color,” it is easy for the viewer to become engrossed in the artist’s environment. To take a walk through the colorful, textural and organic “Woodland Wanderings” is to reconnect with the layered and detailed beauty of our natural world.
The Sally D. Francisco Gallery is located on the second floor of our Craft Store. The Peters Valley Store & Gallery is open Thursday- Tuesday, 10am-6pm.
The workshop season began May 15th and will go until September 12th with 2-5 day classes.
